Cultural Background and Language

At Mt Martha Village Clinic our GPs and staff aim to welcome and treat everybody fairly and equally.  Our registration process asks patients to identify their cultural identity and language needs. This is a recognition of the differences that can exist in the health risks and needs among different groups of people, and to help us identify any ways that we can help provide the best care for everyone.  Of course, cultural identification is voluntary.

If you identify as an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person, we encourage you to let us know to maximise the care we can provide.

Whilst some GPs at MMVC are multi or bilingual, effective communication is vital in consultation with your GP.  If you require additional resource such as translation and interpreter service or Auslan interpreting service to assist, please let our medical reception team know in advance.

Translation & Interpreting Service (TIS National) is available 131 450 and this service is free to Australian Citizens or Permanent Residents who speak a language other than English.

Patients who are deaf or have impaired hearing may choose to be accompanied by a relative or qualified Auslan interpreter.  This service is free for people 65 years and over.  Email vais@vicdeaf.com.au.
