Artificial Intelligence (AI) in healthcare is a new and rapidly evolving area. Independent GPs at MMVC may choose to use AI to automate some patient notes to save time and improve patient care.
The AI tool must comply with Australian standard in compliance with privacy legislation the Australian Privacy Principles and the Australian Privacy Act 1988, speech to text transcription, redaction and storage of GP and patient information and is securely done on Australian shores.
The AI tool must destroy the original audio files from their services immediately after transcription to reduce the potential for unintended data breaches. The audio stream from the consultation must be completely encrypted and securely transferred to server infrastructure.
All information is stored on server infrastructure that is fully-encrypted using bank level 256-bit encryption or better during transit and at rest. There must be agreement between AI tool and server infrastructure so that no party, including the web service can access or alter information and is defaulted to being stored for no longer than 7 days.
Here’s what you need to know:
The GP will seek your consent on the initial occasion. After you consent, the GP may ask you each time or may assume if you consent once, then it is a reasonable expectation for the GP that you are aware that AI is being used for transcribing and there is no need for gaining consent each time.
As this is new technology, we will review this each month.
